Words that have entered the English language from Australian Aboriginal languages include ‘barrmundi’, ‘dingo’, ‘koala’ and ‘wombat’. These came from the myriad of different languages that were spoken throughout pre-colonized Australia. It’s estimated that 200-250 languages were spoken before Europeans arrived, a number which has since collapsed to 145, with another 110 being considered by linguists as ‘critically endangered’.
