The Olympics began in the 8th century BC in Greece. Then, 12 hundred years later, they were banned by Emperor Theodosius I for being a pagan ritual. The Olympics were resurrected in 1894, the first modern Olympics, in Greece. Four years later, women were allowed to participate for the first time in the games.
