Interesting fact:

Mario’s initial name was “Mr. Video.” Creators then came up with the idea to simply call the beloved character "Jumpman.” In the end the idea was abandoned by NoA President Minoru Arakawa, who named the character after the landlord of the Nintendo building, Mario Segale.
