The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. It has an area of 1,728,099 sq mi, and an estimated population of over 510 million. When travelling, countries in the Schengen Area have abolished passport control. The EU as a whole is the largest economy in the world. In 2012, the EU was awarded the Novel Peace Prize.
