Be prepared to hear ‘NO’. If you don’t get what you want, it doesn’t have to be the end of the negotiation. Request a new performance appraisal date and clearly outline the goals you hope to achieve in the lead up to this time.
Don’t be discouraged. If a raise is not going to happen today, consider asking for things beyond your salary, such as development opportunities, or flexible working hours. Even if your boss says no to these things too, at least you put your case forward, and they know that you’re not happy about the current conditions.
