A Tengu, otherwise known as a heavenly dog, is a type of creature found in Japanese folk religion. Originally seen with a beak, this defining feature transformed into an unnaturally long nose over time. The image of these creatures also softened over the years; originally seen as disruptive demons, they eventually became protective spirits of the mountains and forests. They carry fans made of feathers, which, according to some accounts, can either make the noses of people grow longer or shorter or summon great winds.
