Whiscash is an awfully friendly-looking whale, but he’s based on something far more formidable. As the legend goes, the enormous whale Onamazu lives in the mud under the islands of Japan. He’s famously guarded by the god Kashima, who restrains the beast with a large stone. However, should Kashima let his guard fall, Namazu thrashes about and causes violent earthquakes. So the source of the Japanese island's tremors is a giant whale! Thankfully he's just really cute in the world of Pokémon.
