Prior to the Civil War in the United States, schools didn’t have summer vacation! Back in the day in rural communities, school children had time off during the spring planting and fall harvest. But if you were ‘lucky’ enough to be raised in urban schools, you were essentially indoors the whole year round. Summer vacation was only introduced in the early 20th century.
