Coats of arms originated as designs on tunics, which was a cloth worn by knights and soldiers to protect their armor from the sun. It also served as a way to identify one enemy warrior from another. The designs and purpose evolved overtime. Eventually, coat of arms designs incorporated flags representing distinct factions. Some designs even added animal furs, making the emblems even more elaborate.
