Interesting fact:

Until the advent of Scottish nationalism in the 1920s, it was perfectly acceptable to use “England” as a pars pro toto when referring to Great Britain, the UK, or even the entire British Empire. Today, however, British citizens living outside the area of actual England would find this rather inconsiderate and maybe even just a tad rude.
