In the U.S. and Britain, traditional crosswords have 180-degree rotational symmetry so that the patterns of the puzzle appear the same if the paper is turned upside down. In Japanese crosswords, one syllable is used per square instead of one letter, and in Hebrew crosswords, only consonants are used.
