Interesting fact:

The telephone was patented in February 1876. Less than a month later the first telephone call was made by its inventor Alexander Graham Bell to his assistant Watson. Eighty years later the first transatlantic telephone cable was used, running from Canada to Scotland and laying as deep as 12,000 feet.
