The Wizard of Oz was advertised as a cure for war nerves. As a way to boost morale and ticket sales, the movie was billed as an escape for the events unfolding overseas. Admittedly, it is hard to not smile as the lovable characters interact on screen, singing and dancing in a Technicolor dreamscape. One newspaper headline even read: “War Nerves? See The Wizard of Oz for a Genuine Rest”!
