Charon was the mythical ferryman of Hades, the Greek underworld. He carried the souls of the deceased across the river Styx. He was paid with an obolus, a small coin that was usually put in the mouth of a departed. If the fare wasn’t paid, they would have to wander the shores for a hundred years.
