Words that have entered the English language from Australian Aboriginal languages include ‘barrmundi’, ‘dingo’, ‘koala’ and ‘wombat’. These came from the myriad of different languages that were spoken throughout the vast expanse of Australian pre-colonization. It’s estimated that 200-250 languages were spoken before Europeans arrived, a number which has since collapsed to 145, with another 110 being considered by linguists as ‘critically endangered’.
